Frequently Asked Questions

What is a WOF?

The Warrant of Fitness (WOF) for motorcycles, commonly known as the MOT, is a crucial service where skilled mechanics thoroughly inspect your bike to ensure its safety and performance. During this check, they assess the quality of the tires, noting their tread depth and identifying any cracks or dangerous faults. Additionally, the mechanics evaluate the condition of essential components such as the battery, oil, brake fluid, and other vital safety features. Many bikers take advantage of this service before embarking on long trips, enjoying a complimentary breakfast or some relaxation at the nearby bar while their bike is being serviced. Why do some Touring bikes in Thailand have cable clutch instead of hydraulic ?

The distinction between hydraulic clutches on U.S.-manufactured Harley-Davidson touring bikes where the weather can often be cold and cable clutches on those produced in Thailand where riding is often in high temperatures can be attributed to several reasons:
1. **Cost Efficiency**: Manufacturing in Asia, including Thailand, may focus on cost reduction. Cable clutches are typically cheaper to produce and install than hydraulic systems, which helps keep the overall cost of the bike lower.

2. **Market Positioning**: Harley-Davidson may aim to offer a more budget-friendly option in Asian markets. By using cable clutches, they can target a different segment of riders who prioritize affordability over the advanced features found in higher-end models.

3. **Consumer Preferences**: In certain markets, riders may prefer the traditional feel of cable clutches, which can provide more tactile feedback. Harley-Davidson may adapt their offerings based on regional consumer feedback and preferences.

4. **Manufacturing Standardization**: To streamline production and logistics, Harley-Davidson may standardize certain components across different manufacturing plants. If hydraulic clutches are already a standard in the U.S. models, it might be simpler to maintain cable clutches in Thailand to avoid complicating the supply chain.

5. **Regulatory and Compliance Factors**: Different markets may have varying regulations regarding motorcycle components, which could influence the choice of clutch systems used in production. Overall, these factors reflect a strategic approach to manufacturing and market demands, ensuring that Harley-Davidson can cater to a diverse global audience while managing production costs and logistics effectively.

Do i need to tune my bike if i put new exhaust system and air filter?

When you change your exhaust pipes to Vance & Hines and upgrade your air filter on a Harley-Davidson touring bike, it is generally recommended to use a tuner, such as the Screamin’ Eagle Pro Street Tuner or a similar aftermarket tuning .

These modifications can significantly alter the air-fuel mixture and affect engine performance, potentially leading to issues such as poor throttle response or engine knocking if not properly tuned. Tuning via the ECU which often can be flashed with extra hardware since 2013 can help optimize performance, improve fuel efficiency, and ensure the engine runs smoothly with the new exhaust and air filter.

While some riders may choose to skip tuning and rely on stock settings, it’s not advisable, especially if you want to maximize the benefits of your upgrades and maintain engine health. So, while it might not be strictly necessary, it is highly beneficial to use a tuner after making those changes.

Once the ECU has been flashed or a tuner used the most cases, the ECU will continue to adjust an optimize the performance of the bike and will only need to be re-tuned if further hardware is added to the bike such as changing exhaust systems and air filters.

There are several tuning systems available for Harley-Davidson touring bikes, and you can definitely tune your bike without using a Screamin’ Eagle tuner. Here are some popular options:

1. **Screamin’ Eagle Pro Street Tuner**: This is Harley’s proprietary tuning tool, designed specifically for their bikes.

2. **Power Commander**: A popular aftermarket option that allows for extensive tuning and can adjust fuel maps for better performance.

3. **Vance & Hines Fuelpak**: Designed to work well with Vance & Hines exhaust systems, it offers simple plug-and-play tuning.

4. **Dynojet**: Offers a variety of tuning solutions, including the Power Vision, which provides a comprehensive tuning experience.

5. **Bazzaz**: Another aftermarket option that provides fuel management and is often used for performance tuning.

6. **TTS MasterTune**: This is a more advanced tuning solution that provides extensive control over engine parameters.

7. **ECU Flashing as of 2014**: Some companies offer services to flash the bike’s ECU directly, allowing for custom tuning without additional hardware. While the Screamin’ Eagle tuner is designed specifically for Harley bikes, many of the above tuning systems can effectively tune your bike and often provide additional features or flexibility. Always ensure that the tuner you choose is compatible with your specific model and year of Harley-Davidson.

How often should i change my oil?

8000 km or one year is maximum

What DOT oil should i use for my clutch ?

Dot 4 , it normally tells you on top of the master cylinder , remember never mix the DOT grade oils

My hydraulic clutch starts to slip when i am in heavy traffic , is it faulty?

Experiencing clutch slippage in heavy traffic, especially in hot temperatures, can be frustrating but is a common occurrence when riding a touring HD. If the bike is well serviced then this is often down to in experience and either riding the clutch or holding the clutch in at traffic lights or when stopping for considerable time , I this is the case then once you get on to open roads and the bikes operation temperature the clutch will operate normally again .

Here are the potential causes and solutions for this issue on your Harley-Davidson touring bike:

### Causes of Clutch Slippage:

1. **Use the Clutch Sparingly**: This is the most common cause .In heavy traffic, try to use the clutch only when necessary. If you need to stop for a longer time, consider putting the bike in neutral to relieve pressure on the clutch.

2. **Heat Build-up**: Holding the clutch in for extended periods generates heat, which can cause the clutch plates to expand and lose their grip.

3. **Clutch Wear**: Over time, clutch plates can wear out, leading to reduced friction and slippage, particularly under stress.

4. **Improper Adjustment**: If the clutch cable is not correctly adjusted, it may not fully engage or disengage, leading to slippage.

5. **Fluid Issues**: If you have a hydraulic clutch, low fluid levels or old, contaminated fluid can affect performance, leading to slippage.

6. **Oil Contamination**: If engine oil contaminates the clutch plates, it can reduce friction, causing slippage.

### Solutions to Prevent Clutch Slippage:

1. **Adjust Clutch Cable**: Ensure that your clutch cable is properly adjusted. There should be a small amount of free play at the lever, allowing for full engagement and disengagement.

3. **Regular Maintenance**: Check your clutch plates for wear and replace them if necessary. Regular maintenance can help prevent issues caused by wear and tear.

4. **Check Fluid Levels**: If you have a hydraulic clutch, ensure the fluid is at the proper level and is clean. Change the fluid if it’s old or contaminated.

5. **Use Quality Oil**: Make sure you’re using the recommended oil for your motorcycle. Some oils can cause clutch slippage if not designed for wet clutches.

6. **Heat Management**: If you’re frequently in heavy traffic, consider taking breaks to let the engine and clutch cool down. If the problem persists despite these adjustments and checks, it may be wise to consult a professional mechanic to diagnose any underlying issues.

Where is the VIN Number on my bike?

Your motorcycle’s VIN is typically found either below the handlebars along its steering neck or on the bottom close to its cylinders. A VIN is a combination of 17 numbers and letters used to look up information about the motorcycle’s history and condition. When buying a pre-owned Harley-Davidson®, it’s customary to check the VIN to see if it’s been in any severe accidents or has had any major work done on it. You should also be able to see when the last inspection was completed. This info could help you have a bargaining chip to get the final sales price reduced.

I bought a bike and it was listed as a 2022 . the vin shows its a 2022 yet the green book is 2021 how can this be?

This is very common and Thailand, Harley Davidson USA  use to release their new models into Thailand normally 2 to 3 months before the end of each year so an actual fact you should go off the Vin number not the green book . The green book states the year of registration in most cases .
